On another forum, this topic is sort of hot. One of the big "reasons" is that "we've done it that way for years..." Just because it's "been done for years" doesn't make it right, good, or the best way. Lot's of old "wisdoms" have fallen by the wayside once proper studies have been done. Wound care went through a major rework a few years ago, when much of the old "wisdoms" about using Iodine based solutions were found to be untrue. I've presented the info as to the why's and wherefore's of barbells in several threads, so I'm not going to present it again. But, just visualize a barbell vs a ring hanging from a nipple, and you'll start to see why the old wisdoms don't ring true any more ;) I would actually like to see several controlled studies on this, since one study would only require more studies to be done.... But personal hygeine is part of the variables, and FWIW in my experiences, the body piercing crowd runs the full range of cleanliness, in a far more "even" distribution than the general population. Other factors, such as time of year (hot or cold) and job type (desk vs factory or landscaping) would also probably influence healing. But, there is no "pressure" from a barbell, if it's fitted right. There *is* *always* pressure from a ring, either by the curve it'self on the edge of the wounds, or the fact that there is 2-3x the weight in steel in a ring than in a barbell of comparable gauge. A barbell only has to be the diameter of the ring, and the ring's circumference is pi times the diameter, or roughly 3x the length/weight of a barbell. You can thus use longer barbells than you can wider rings, and get better healing. One other source of problems is that people use rings that are way too small for healing. A 1/4-3/8th inch diameter nipple would need a barbell only about 5/8ths inch long (between beads), but would require a ring closer to 1" or a tad larger to allow proper straight healing of the wound. Draw it out yourself, and the 1" ring would still cause the healing wound to deform from it's original straight path, while pulling down on the nipple much more than a barbell would. I don't pierce the 'off the street' crowd, so my demographics are much different than the "general" population. Again, I'd like to see controlled studies in wound healing before taking this any further into a "religious" argument of ring vs barbell.
